About the u3a

WHO ARE WE?

We've been through the University of Youth and the University of Life.  Now it is the University of our Third Age.

Wrexham u3a is a member of the Third Age Trust. The 'Third Age' begins when we have finished full-time employment.

The u3a brings together retired and semi-retired (third age) people to pursue educational, social, and creative interests on a self-help basis in a friendly environment. The u3a is a UK-wide voluntary movement providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly and information environment for members of the community no longer in full-time employment.

The u3a model is low-cost, member-led and self-financing. The emphasis is on inclusion, enjoyment and pursuing interests together. Our present membership is around 400 and new members are most welcome.

The U3A ETHOS

The u3a is not a service-provider. It is a mutual aid organisation to which everyone is expected to contribute. It's for the Members by the Members. Its success depends on the willingness of members to volunteer and help out in whatever way they can by:

If you would like assistance to enable you to participate, please login, click on "Contact Member” in Personal Menu. Then type “MEM” in box, and send us your request. A member of our team will get in touch to discuss what assistance we can offer.

WHAT DO WE DO?

MEMBERS MEETINGS:
Wrexham u3a holds monthly meetings, with speakers and refreshments to purchase, at Wrexham Memorial Hall at 2pm on the third Tuesday of the month, except August and December.

The format is usually U3a news then a speaker with an informal chat over a cup of tea or coffee. Click on the "Activities" Menu then "Members Meets" for the programme.  There is plenty of parking nearby. If you are considering joining our U3a, you can attend a meeting and talk to us about our Groups before joining us.

We publish a Quarterly Newsletter, available on our website, with articles on our various activities, and details of upcoming events. We email to members our Monthly Bulletin.

GROUPS:
Wrexham u3a has over 380 members with around 50 interest groups. These normally meet once or twice a month, and members can join as many or as few as they wish. Groups use a variety of venues in the area. To find out more, click on "Groups" in "Activities" menu

WHO CAN BE MEMBERS?
Anyone who is retired or semi-retired can be a member, regardless of age. We draw members mainly from the Wrexham area, but some are from further afield. We share cars or use coaches for trips so having no car will not prevent you from participating.

Please click on the “Join our U3a”  link at the top menu line. You can then read our Terms & Conditions and hopefully join us. You can pay by card on the application screen, so have it ready. By email you will receive a member number and password to use our website, where all the information is available.

 WHAT DOES IT COST?
The annual subscription runs from May 1st to April 30th. If you join from Jan 2nd to April 30th this year, you get membership right through until May 1st the following year. The cost is £15.00, for your first year, and you can renew at £15 per year afterwards. Individual groups may make a small charge to cover running costs such as room hire and equipment.

Wrexham u3a has been developing since it's beginnings in 2006. As with all u3a's, it is entirely voluntary and run by a small committee drawn from within the membership.

Wrexham u3a has around 50 groups running at any one time, some running on long term, others time-limited.  They are all sizes from 6 to 46, covering a wide range of subjects and activities and meet all over Wrexham in places ranging from church halls (where there may be a small charge to cover the venue hire) to members' homes.

We also arrange events that are open to all members. Examples include a Summer Treasure Hunt, Christmas Lunch, Theatre Trips and Day Trips by coach to places like RHS Bridgewater and Haddon Hall

WHY NOT GIVE IT A TRY?
